There are two Arran distilleries on the island of Arran; the original distillery at Lochranza and the newly opened Lagg distillery (which focuses on peated expressions). Blessed with plentiful water supplies and fertile soil for growning barley, not to mention a close proximity to Glasgow, the island has always been a haven for illicet distilling. But beginning in 1995, legal distillation has made Arran a highly desirable destination for visitors.
Arran was an early adopter of cask finishes. Just 8 years after starting production, the distillery released its first limited-edition Calvados Cask Finish expression. The Arran 17 Years Old Rare Batch Calvados Cask Edition takes it a step further: this rare single malt was fully aged in casks previously used to mature Calvados. These casks were sourced from a producer in the Pont-l’Eveque region of Normandy.
Nose: Apple turnovers, vanilla bean pudding and Fry's cocoa powder.
Palate: Creamy, orchard apples, vanilla fudge, milk chocolates with raspberry centres.
Finish: Long-ish with orchard fruits and lingering dark chocolate.
