When the Cinzano family arrived in 1973, most of the wine bottled in Montalcino was Brunello. A second denomination, “Vino Rosso dai Vigneti di Brunello,” was used locally to improve the image of the wine sold mostly in bulk formats. Count Alberto Marone Cinzano decided that it was just the right wine for drinking every day. He used to say: “it’s the young Sangiovese I drink at lunchtime.” In 1976, three years later, Col d’Orcia already represented more than half the production of “Rosso” in Montalcino. Thanks to Col d’Orcia’s efforts in 1983, Rosso di Montalcino became a D.O.C. wine by Decree of the Italian President of the Republic.
Rosso di Montalcino is now a classic wine, made with pure Sangiovese grapes, released one year after the harvest so as to retain all the freshness and fruitiness of a young wine and at the same time the intensity that only the Montalcino terroir is capable of delivering.
Montalcino – Siena - Sant'Angelo hill overlooking the Orcia River, facing South-South/West and exposed to sun ray all day long.
Average height 300 m above sea level.
After a cold and occasionally snowy winter, some positive weather events produced a little water accumulation in the soil. The spring was quite warm. The summer was very hot without rain. The rains of early September restored the balance to some extent favouring the ripening of the Sangiovese grape. The overall drought led to a noticeable reduction of yields with small berries and great concentration of the grapes.
Sangiovese, locally called "Brunello" (the same variety used in the production of Brunello di Montalcino).
Fermentation on grape skins for about 10 - 12 days at controlled temperature below 28° C in shallow, wide steel tanks (150 hl), in order to obtain a delicate tannin and colour extraction.
12 months in Slavonian oak casks between 75 and 150 hl, followed by refinement in bottle.
Colour - Deep ruby red with violet hues.
Aroma - Intense, fruity and elegant, the evident hints of ripe red fruits (blackberry and raspberry) are perfectly balanced with the pleasant scents of the oak originated by the ageing in the barrels.
Flavour - Good structure, warm and full-bodied, with soft elegant tannins.
Long and persistent pleasant fruity aftertaste.
