It’s believed that monks returning from the mediterranean brought skills for distilling perfumes to ireland in the 11th century. those monks soon figured out their distillates were good for more than just perfume. during the next 500 years, the spirit known as uisce beatha (water of life in irish gaelic) spread across ireland. in 1608, northern ireland’s old bushmills became the world’s first licensed whiskey distillery (well over 90 years before the art of distilling officially made its way to scotland). whiskey was such big business in ireland that, by 1835, there were over 93 licensed distilleries in operation. The English translation of “Barr an Uisce” (pronounced Bar on Ishka) is ‘above the water’ but it is also the name given to the townland of Barranisky in the County of Wicklow near where distillery owner, Ian Jones was raised. The Barr an Uisce brand represents all that is beautiful in Wicklow and Ireland and celebrates the history of the townlands and culture. Matured in first fill Kentucky bourbon barrels, this special bottle displays all the hallmarks of attentive wood aging.
