Glenmorangie is a famous single malt distillery situated just north of the town of Tain in Ross-shire, in the Highlands region of Scotland.
The facility had been a brewery before being refitted as a distillery in 1843. Glenmorangie was one of the early leaders in exporting its product, particularly to the US. Indeed, the distillery closed between 1931 and 1936 due to the effects of Prohibition.
Glemorangie is of the best-known distilleries, despite its confusing pronunciation – it is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, rather than on the first and third. Its six wash stills and six spirit stills produce around 6 million liters per year, making it one of the largest distilleries as well.
All product is matured in white oak casks from Glenmorangie's own forest in the Missouri Ozarks in Missouri. The barrels are then leased to Jack Daniel's and Heaven Hill to store Bourbon before being shipped to Scotland.
The standard offering is the 10-year-old Original, but there are many expressions available. In fact, Glenmorangie was one of the first distilleries to experiment with different wood finishes for its whisky, where the spirit receives a second period of maturation (a finish) in a different type of barrel. The company has offered a range of finishes including Sherry, Port, Sauternes and Madeira.
