In 1980, Robert Kamen came to Sonoma to celebrate the sale of his first screen play. While hiking the rugged hillsides of the Southern Mayacamas Mountains, Robert came upon a piece of property with breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay. Remote, rugged, and without roads, water or electricity, the 280 acres had an immediate visceral impact on Robert. A week later the property was his.
From the beginning, Robert had a clear concept of what he intended for his property. First and foremost was the desire to plant the highest quality mountain grown Cabernet Sauignon, while holding true to the pristine spirit of the land.
In 2018 Northern experienced a dry winter. In May, after bud break, we received 6 inches of rain. Fast forward to the summer solstice in late June and we saw our first of many 100 degree days. The late rain combined with the heat created lush, fruitful vines. The heat calmed down after veraison and we had slow ripening and prolonged hang time which allowed the classic Kamen flavors to explode. All in all a terrific vintage!
Phenomenal concentration! A core of ripe black-raspberries, wild blackberries, black currants and freshly picked cherries anchor the aromatic profile. Bright notes of freshly picked wildflowers followed by hints of sunbaked rocks after the rain, marzipan, Oolong tea, black cardamom and milk chocolate add tremendous depth and complexity. The flavors follow suit and are richly layered, exquisitely balanced and refined. This deliciously seamless wine offers ripe, mouthwatering tannins and a lengthy finish. Enjoy now and over its decades long evolution.
