Dating from 1823, Mortlach has always had the reputation of being the 'weightiest' whisky in the Spey region - owing to the use of a small third still named 'Wee Witchie'. Wee Witchie, used only to distill the weak feints from the much larger wash and spirit stills, boosts the 'meaty' component of the spirit significantly allowing Mortlach to truly stand out amongst all other Speyside whiskies. Slower fermentation, rapid distillation and the use of worm tubs also contribute heavily to this outstanding Speyside malt. It truly deserves its nickname, 'The Beast of Dufftown'. And since the 15 year is no longer a core product on the Mortlach portfolio (replaced by the less complex 16 year old ), once this whisky goes it will be gone for ever.
Nose: The oft repeated term 'meaty' comes through, even on the nose. There is a dried fig, oily texture that becomes immediately apparent upon first sniff. Those with heightened 'sulphur' sensitivities will notice it immediately.
Palate: Oily, sweet and savoury. Rarely is the term 'beefy' applied in scotch tastings but it is very apropos here. Stewed stone fruits, more dried figs and dark chocolate.
Finish: Medium-long and warming. Stewed plums and dark hot chocolate.
