Tamnavulin is a Speyside distillery located, gawd love the Scots, in the village of Tomnavoulin. Relatively new, it was constructed in 1966 and was quiet for a 12-year span, reopening after renovation in 2007. Tamnavulin is owned and operated by Whyte & Mackay (who also own the more famous cousins - Jura and Dalmore).
Tamnavulin Double Cask was the first release from the distillery since the 1990s! Initially matured in American oak barrels before treating it to a finishing period in sherry casks.
Nose: Meaty, chocolate mousse, extra thick double cream with a dusting of brown sugar. The sherry notes are very faint – mostly adding the nuttiness and a faint suggestion of dates or prunes.
Palate: Toasted nuts, dates, and chewy buttery toffee. Mid and back palate reveal hints of Christmas pudding, chocolate brownies, yellow plum and toffee-coated barley.
Finish: Medium-long. Deep and robust buttery flavours continue, along with toasted nuts and a bit of port wine and spiced rum sweetness lingering on the finish.
