Tomatin is one of those distilleries (once the largest in Scotland) that was purpose-built to produce malt for use in blends. Only recently has Tomatin been moved to release a single malt. The 12 year is aged in ex-bourbon casks, and then finished for 6 to 9 months in oloroso sherry casks. The result is a classically smooth whisky.
Nose: Buttery at first, but notes of raisin and almond soon take over.
Palate: Oak-y vanilla and fresh mint, dotted with stem ginger and dried orange peel.
Finish: Currant buns, a hint of raspberry jam, barley.
