Clyde Mays operated as an illicit (and much sought after) moonshiner in Alabama for 55 years (including a eight-month stretch in a Federal
Penitentiary) before going legit in 2001. By that point his 'moonshine' was so famous that it was voted the official state spirit of Alabama.
