Ichiro’s 100% blended malts are sourced from two historic distilleries: the shuttered Hanyu distillery and the operational Chichibu distillery.
Ichiro's Malt Wine Wood Reserve is a blend of malt whisky from both distilleries, then finished in Ovums — egg-shaped French oak red wine casks. These casks are produced in the Charentaise region of France and are mainly used to age Bordeaux.
Ichiro derives its name from Ichiro Akuto, the owner/founder of Chichibu distillery and grandson of the founder of Hanyu. Ichiro managed to secure approximately 400 casks of Hanyu Malt after its closure.
Nose: Lots happening here: wood notes, wet hayfields, tropical fruit and coconut.
Palate: A bit thinner than anticipated, ginger, white pepper and allspice. Nothing dominates.
Finish: Short and spicy. Ginger at the very end.
