Bottled for Whisky Drop's Roulette Club, the Killowen Rum & Raisin Single Malt is an extraordinary malt aged in ex-rum and ex-sherry casks.
Launched in 2017 by Brendan Carty, Liam Brogan, and Shane McCarthy, the Killowen Distillery is located halfway between Belfast and Dublin in the Mourne Mountains of County Down.
The distillery can be found at the base of Knock Shee (the Fairy Mountain) with a view that slopes down to the sea. This tiny distillery’s maritime climate places a unique fingerprint on the spirits distilled and aged there.
Nose: Green apples and raisins, along with Demerara molasses and warm plum pudding.
Palate: Creamy and thick mouthfeel with vanilla, raisins, dried dates and figs, ripe red grapes, blackberries, black currants — all influenced by the PX and Rum finishing.
Finish: Medium length. Caramel/toffee that lingers, malt, marzipan and dried figs disappear quickly.
