The Third Crop of Lochlea Ploughing Edition concludes Lochlea's limited-edition, seasonal releases.
The Ploughing Edition is the only Lochlea release with a distinctive smoky profile. The Third Crop rested in 200-litre casks that previously held peated Islay whisky, resulting in the smokiest Lochlea whisky thus far.
Until 2014, Lochlea operated as a dairy farm; however, the new owners decided that they needed to do something very different for a farm of that size to be viable. They planted 50 acres of malting barley in 2015, and soon after, they decided to build a Lowland farm distillery.
Nose: Granny Smith apples, butterscotch and fresh malted barley.
Palate: Fresh orchard fruit, floral peat smoke and the malt follows through from the nose..
Finish: Campfire smoke and a long, lingering hint of peat.
