Benromach 21 Year Old
Regular price $270.00
Situated on the outskirts of the ancient town of Flores, the Benromach distillery was founded by the Benromach Distillery Company in 1898. Beginning in 1911 the distillery changed hands several times until its eventual closure in 1983.
In 1993 Gordon and MacPhail took over the site and in 1997 they started to restore the distillery to a working order. This included two new stills, a new mash tun and washbacks that had been rescued and reworked from the originals. The design of the distillery was changed slightly to allow it to be operated by one man.
In 1998 the distillery was officially reopened by the Prince of Wales and bottling of the new malt started in 2004.
Current distillery manager, Keith Cruickshank describes the 21 year old Benromach as delivering sweet Sherry aromas - no doubt due to the maturation in the hand-selected first-fill Bourbon and Sherry oak casks. This Speysider boasts that classic, Benromach smokiness alongside gentle spices and fruit. A heady mix of flavours indeed.
Nose: Sweet Sherry aromas with underlying citrus, ginger and oak notes, accompanied by a touch of smoke.
Palate: Sweet initially with cracked black pepper, Seville orange and raspberry flavours lead to baked apple and subtle spice.
Finish: Charred oak and soft smoke.
