Kaiyō Cask Strength is an independently bottled Japanese whisky with a remarkable story.
Kaiyō Cask Strength is a teaspooned malt, distilled at a single distillery but with a very small amount of malt from another distillery added to the final product.
However, while this whisky was distilled and aged in Japan, it cannot technically be called 'Japanese whisky.'
This expression first ages in Mizunara oak casks in an abandoned railway tunnel, then the casks are 'finished' on a boat off the coast of Japan — which may be the reason it cannot be designated as Japanese whisky.
Nose: Light and floral, fresh stone fruit, and a hint of maple syrup merge with bakery aromas.
Palate: Bosc pear, nutmeg and vanilla up front. Hints of oak on the back palate.
Finish: Long finish with stone fruits from the nose, along with menthol and oak spice. There is a slight earthiness at the end.
