Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice Clynelish 2008 (Cask #311776) was selected from a single cask by Canadian whisky commentator Matt James (Whisky on the West Coast).
As a spirit, Clynelish is widely regarded as one of the true darlings of whisky by the finest palates in the industry, including master blenders and other distillers.
Built in 1968 to increase capacity over its predecessor, the Brora Distillery, Clynelish was constructed to produce the same new-make spirit in stills using the exact same design, and to use water sourced from the same Clynemilton Burn.
At its heart, Clynelish has a highly distinctive, fragrant, waxy character resulting from an unusual distillation process in which the natural oily compounds build up in the feints receiver. The spirit is complex, fragrant, viscous, and fruity. It is an outstanding single malt with a truly unique flavour and history.
Nose: Pressed apple combines with light fruitcake and toasted hazelnuts. Ginger and Nutmeg give way to Demerara sugar.
Palate: Milk chocolate raisins and orange marmalade. Roasted coffee beans come to the fore alongside tart raspberry and chilli spice
Finish: Full and spicy with lasting citrus fruit.
