The Kilbeggan distillery dates from the 1880s but was mothballed in 1957. In the late 20th Century it re-opened as a whiskey museum. Around the same time, John Teeling the owner of Cooley distillery, bought the rights to the brand, as well as the right to warehouse products on the Kilbeggan site, and began producing Kilbeggan at the Cooley facility. In 2007 the company refurbished the old Kilbeggan distillery and in 2010 began producing whiskey at the old site again. Cooley's now owned by Bean Suntory.
