Macaloney's Mac Na Braiche Singlemalt Spirit
Regular price $105.00
Victoria Caledonian Distillery was founded in Saanich, Greater Victoria in 2016 by Scottish expat Graeme Macaloney. Mac Na Braiche is Gaelic for "son of malt" and is made from Canadian barley and is aged in a mix of American and European oak for around 20 months. The spirit is then finished in recharred red wine barriques. This is not a Canadian whisk(e)y in that it has not spent a minimum of 3 years in oak. Instead, it is a spirit distilled from 100% Malted barley at less than 95% ABV (otherwise it falls into the category of neutral grain spirit. As well, the spirit must not be proofed to below 40% ABV and must have the characteristics, taste and aroma generally attributed to whisk(e)y.
Nose: Complex nose with notes of stewed fruit, vanilla, caramel and wet oak.
Palate: Tannins are prominent (typical of wine cask finishes), oaky notes and stone fruits - peach maybe?
Finish: Long and spicy but with plenty of feistiness ... a signal of its young age.
