Unlike Bourbon or Rye which, by definition, must be aged in new oak barrels, Michter's US*1 Unblended American Whiskey is aged in a way that utilizes whiskey-soaked barrels to achieve a rich and unique flavour profile. As such, this expression cannot be called bourbon, as bourbon needs to be matured in new American oak barrels - hence why it's called whiskey instead. Slightly confusing legal nomenclature aside, it's incredible! It was in late 2013 that Master Distiller Willie Pratt agreed to re-release the US*1 American Whiskey after a nearly three-year absence, deeming it “just right” and “the best it’s ever been.” Crucially, the US*1 American Whiskey does not contain grain neutral spirits.
Nose: Freshly polished wood, buttered corn and a spicy kick.
Palate: Wonderfully creamy mouthfeel with notes of butterscotch, golden syrup and sultanas.
Finish: Corn appears again with peach and apple pie for dessert.
