Planteray Rum (formerly Plantation Rum), a premium rum brand, was founded in 2003 by Alexandre Gabriel, the owner of Maison Ferrand (Citadelle Gin).
His journey into the world of rum began in the 1990s, when he embarked on a quest to discover and revive traditional rum-making methods.
In 2017, Gabriel purchased the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, which also gave him a 1/3 share in Jamaica's National Rum Company — owners of the Long Pond and Clarendon Distilleries.
For this expression, Gabriel sourced 18 casks of a 2004 vintage column still rum from the Rum Co. of Fiji. This release was aged in the tropics for 17 years in ex-Bourbon casks before journeying across two oceans and ageing for an additional 2 years in the southwest of France in Ferrand Cognac casks and 1 year in Japanese Ume fruit liqueur casks.
